This creates a definition line for literal senses in otherwise figurative or idiomatic expressions.

Usage

The template should be placed in a definition line.

The order of senses should be either figurative first or literal first, choosing the most appropriate for the given instance. This notion also accords with the spirit of Wiktionary:Style guide § Definition sequence, which wants the usefulness to an average user to be the chief criterion for the order of senses.

2=, 3=, ..., if not wikified

{{&lit|en|foo|bar}} displays as Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see foo,‎ bar.
If not provided, the title will be split at its white spaces: {{&lit|en}} in the article dirty linen displays as Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see dirty,‎ linen.

alt1, alt2, etc.

display forms for the numbered parameter: {{&lit|en|foo|alt1=bar}} displays as Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see bar.

2=, 3=, ..., if the first is wikified

{{&lit|en|see [[foo]] or [[bar]]}} displays as Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see foo or bar.

qualifier=[qualifier]

Displays as "[Qualifier] used other than as an idiom" if exists

Displays "[anything]" instead of a trailing period (full stop).

Suppress the display of the trailing period (full stop).
