From Old Khmer ឱង្ការ (oṅkāra), ឱង្គការ (oṅgakāra), ឩង្ការ (ūṅkāra, “royal command”); ultimately from සංස්කෘත ओङ्कार (oṅkāra), ओंकार (oṃkāra, “the sacred syllable/exclamation Om”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ឱង្ការ (ʼaôngkar).
