This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections, and on talk pages, to provide a citation to the Merriam-Webster Online ("MW Online") website.

  • |1= or |entry= – the name of the entry on MW Online. If this parameter is not stated, the name of the Wiktionary entry is used.
  • |pos= or |part of speech= – the part of speech of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
  • |2= or |url= – if the default URL is not linking to the correct webpage, use this parameter to indicate the URL of the MW Online webpage to be linked to.
  • |subentry= – a term that appears as a subentry under an entry.
  • |subpos= – the part of speech of the subentry.
  • |source= – use |source=1 or |source=yes to display the source relied on by MW Online: Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (11th edition, 2003).
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage quoted from the website.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
  • Wikitext: {{R:Merriam-Webster Online|entry=dilemma|pos=n|text=Although some commentators insist that ''dilemma'' be restricted to instances in which the alternatives to be chosen are equally unsatisfactory, their concern is misplaced.|nodot=1}}
  • Result: “dilemma, n.”, in Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, Springfield, Mass.: Merriam-Webster, 1996–present: “Although some commentators insist that dilemma be restricted to instances in which the alternatives to be chosen are equally unsatisfactory, their concern is misplaced.”
